Steps to Use ZoneAlarm in a Network
We will discuss how to configure the free edition version of Zone Alarm in a network, and will use a two-PC model for the purpose. The procedure described below will be similar for use in a multi-unit network. For our two-PC model, let us assume one PC serves as the home PC and the other is the client PC. The procedure will be as follows:
- Install the latest free version of Zone Alarm on the two units, both the home PC (gateway) and client PC. At this point, you will not be able to access or share files on your network.
- We will now find the IP address for each PC. This is done by right-clicking your mouse on the 'network connection' icon. The IP address will appear in the format of 192.xxx.x.x which will serve as the IP address for your home PC.
- Follow the same steps on the client PC to get its IP address. However, you will not see any IP address after completing the steps. The client PC will get an automatic IP address, but you won't see it in the client PC. Now, we go back to the home PC, where Zone Alarm works, and you will see another IP address. This is the IP address of your client PC.
- After getting the IP address of both the home and client PCs, try to open Zone Alarm in your home PC. Click on "Firewalls" and then "Zones". From this point, you will get an entry to the IP address of your client PC. Then, add the client PC to the "trusted" zone of home PC. Now you can try to access files in the client PC from the home PC. But if you try to access the Internet via home PC, you will not succeed.
- In the following step, open Zone Alarm on home PC and click "Firewall" and then "Main". Now set for the "Internet security" and then for "trusted zone security".

- In the next step, go to client PC and try to access the Internet. Now, you will be succeeding to configure the free edition of Zone Alarm on the home PC and thereby getting access for sharing files and Internet with the client PC.
- In the last step, you are advised to go to your client PC and follow the instructions given in steps 4 and 5.
In the end, you will find that both the home and client PC will run successfully under the protection of Zone Alarm. More importantly, you will be able to share your Internet and network files without any difficulty.
